One of the first courses I took in college was with Vito Russo, who wrote a book called 'The Celluloid Closet', which is a history of gay and lesbian people in film. He said to us, 'You can't separate your struggle as a gay person from the struggles of women,' because the oppression of gays is built on the premise that the feminine is subjugated in society. That made a big impression on me.
